Hedgehogs in May

This year Hedgehog Awareness Week runs from 5th – 11th May, BHPS is asking everyone to do one extra thing to help hedgehogs that week. You might build a hedgehog home, put up a poster display locally (materials available from BHPS), run a fundraiser for your local rescue centre or even simply ensure there’s always a shallow bowl of water in your garden for thirsty hedgehogs.

Button

Button was brought to us after being found collapsed on a driveway. She was taken to the Vets as we are very concerned for her. She has swelling all down her right side, from her eye to her tail, including her legs, and has severe bruising. She was x-rayed but no breaks were found thankfully. It is possible that she has some brain trauma, and we will have to wait and see how that develops.

Released to the wild

Here are some photos of some of the hogs that were released yesterday into a lovely large garden with several hog houses. There is plenty of natural cover for the hogs, large lawns to search for worms etc on and easy access to other adjoining gardens. The hogs are also supplement fed her, as the residents love to watch the hogs feeding.

Two new entries today, one just after midnight last night and one this morning at 8.30.Last night’s entry is a male, found unresponsive on the pavement. He was dehydrated so was given subcutaneous fluids and offered food and water. He had eaten all his food when we checked him earlier this morning and is looking fine, so will be released after a couple of days observation.

Lizzie update

Update on Lizzie – vet has confirmed she has had some sort of blow to the head, and is suffering with concussion. Her eye has fully closed now, but we have to wait to see how it develops, hopefully the swelling will go down in a day or two and her eye will be non the worse for wear.

Lizzie

A very kind lady brought this young female hedgehog to us from Bransgore, where it was found out in a car park, walking in circles during the day. She has a swollen right eye, and seems to have some tenderness around its head, but no sign of a wound.

Half-way there…

A busy night ahead with a string of people coming to collect their hedgehogs for release. Love having them, but love it when they go back “home” to where they belong. Who was it that sung that song “oh-oh we’re half-way there…” 54 gone, 54 left to go. We might even get a week off at this rate.

Strimmers again!

Yesterday we received yet another hedgehog with severe strimmer injuries, which included the almost complete removal of his face and the entire nose. He was sadly euthanised due to the severity of his injuries, as hedgehogs cannot find food without their noses.
