More hoglets

All I can say is that I hope we don’t have too many days and nights like last weekend!

Emergency after emergency. Four hogs giving birth, one of which produced four stillborn babies, two mothers had four babies each, and one had six!

Two of the mothers were brought in after being picked up by dogs within half an hour of each other, and placed in recovery boxes as we were dealing with the half-drowned hog.

When we went to check on them an hour later, we found they had both given birth.

The litter of six was rejected by the mother, she kept flicking them out of the nest with her nose, then picked up one and started shaking it, resulting in a wound on its back, another has a bruised front leg, so I had to remove the babies to an incubator pretty sharpish.

One of the mothers has a possible broken back leg, which as she was giving birth we have been unable to do anything with at present. She seems fine, if knackered, and is feeding the babies, so we’ll have to leave her for now.

I’ve had to give the six babies subcutaneous fluids, which was a bit scary due to their size. Their weights ranged from 15.6g to 17.9g. They appear to be about a week premature.

We are so inundated that we put out a call for help, and Shirley and Susan from New Milton Hedgehog Rescue came to our aid. Shirley came to collect the wee hoglets to lighten our load, and they will be looked after by the lovely people at New Milton.

Tiny Pikachu trying his first solids, a mix of Esbilac and Hills a/d. His teeth are now starting to appear.

He seemed more interested in the lid (off a small jar) at first, then seemed to realise the meat was there and was tasty 😀 He polished off the whole lot in the end.

This should mean we can go longer between feeds now, which Tracy will be happy about.

It’s nice holding them to feed them, but better when they can feed themselves.
