Danger! Pond

A timely reminder of the danger that ponds pose to hedgehogs – this large adult male, 1.5kg, came in this morning after being found in a garden pond.
He is very cold, and his feet are all wrinkly from immersion. He is in one of our ICU’s warming up at the moment. We will keep him in for a few days to make sure he does not have secondary drowning or develop a respiratory infection from inhaling water.
If you have a pond, please make sure there is a way for hedgehogs and other wildlife to get out if they fall in, such as a ramp or gently sloping side with stones etc so the animal can get a grip to climb out.
